La Befana
The Ancient Witch of Winter’s Threshold.

Before she swept chimneys, filled stockings, or became part of Epiphany in the Christian tradition, La Befana was a figure of raw winter magic. She was the last great witch who walked the line between the living world and the spirit realm.

Her story goes back to Italy’s oldest myths, when people believed in the Three Faces of the Year: the Maiden of Spring, the Mother of Summer, and the Crone of Winter.

The Crone, dressed in night and crowned with frost, breathed the cold that sealed the soil. She was said to sweep across the land with a broom made of the first wood ever grown, older than human memory. Wherever her broom touched, she cleared away the tired spirits of the old year, making room for new life.

That Crone, with her terror and wisdom, is the ancient skeleton of the figure we now call Befana.

People said her eyes gleamed like lanterns in a blizzard. Her clothes were patchwork because every piece represented a part of time — rags from forgotten seasons, worn thin by centuries. The earliest tales say she knew every birth, every death, and every unspoken wish.

Children left her offerings of wine and honey not out of excitement but out of respect, hoping she would bless their homes instead of taking their luck with the old year’s dust.

La Befana Today
As Christianity spread, the winter spirits faded, but Befana, stubborn and ageless, found her way into the new stories.

She became the witch who met the Magi. She became the woman who searched for the divine child. For a time, she was both tender and tragic.

However, those who know the older tale say that the Epiphany flight is merely a surface story, a gentle mask over ancient bones. On the coldest nights, when the sky is dark and heavy, she still walks the crossroads.
The wind shifts like footsteps behind you.

The hearth fire flickers as if someone has just passed by, and somewhere, carried on the deep winter air, you can hear the soft, almost comforting whisper of a broom sweeping unseen.

For she is still the Witch of the Turning Year, a guardian of thresholds, a wanderer of the liminal. She reminds us that magic is strongest when the world is darkest.Every January 5th, when Befana roams the world once more, she brings not just gifts but the echo of a time when winter belonged to spirits and the night carried both wonder and fear.

The Festival of Yule
Yule is a winter festival that has been celebrated for centuries in various cultures, particularly in Germanic countries. It marks the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, and symbolizes the rebirth of the sun.

The traditions associated with Yule are deeply rooted in paganism and have heavily influenced many of our modern Christmas customs.

The word "Yule" is believed to have come from the Old Norse word "Jól," referring to a 12-day feast. Ancient Germanic peoples celebrated Yule to honor their gods and goddesses, such as Odin, Freyja, and Frigg. It was a time for feasting, storytelling, and bonfires to ward off evil spirits and welcome the longer days.

One of the most enduring Yule traditions is the burning of the Yule log. Historically, a large log would be specially selected, decorated, and then burned in the hearth as a symbol of warmth, light, and protection for the coming year. The ashes were sometimes kept for good luck or used to fertilize fields. This practice evolved into the modern Yule log cakes and decorative fireplace logs.

Yule Today
The use of evergreens like holly, ivy, and mistletoe during Yule also predates the Christian Christmas traditions. These plants symbolized life and vitality during the harsh winter months. They were brought indoors to purify the air and to remind people that spring would eventually return.

The tradition of decorating a "Yule tree" or "Christmas tree" emerged much later, becoming popular in Germany and then spreading to other parts of the world.

Feasting was a central part of Yule, with families gathering to share lavish meals.

Gift-giving was also common, though it differed from modern Christmas gift exchanges. Gifts were often practical items, food, or tokens of good fortune.

As Christianity spread, many Yule traditions were incorporated into the celebration of Christmas.

The timing of Christmas, December 25th, was likely chosen to coincide with existing pagan winter solstice festivals, making the transition easier for new converts. The feasting, gift-giving, evergreens, and even the imagery of Santa Claus (who shares similarities with Odin's wild hunt) all have roots in ancient Yule customs.

Although todays children expect Father Christmas to be dressed in red, this notion was the Invention of the Coca Cola marketing division, in mythology he was more commonly dressed in green.

Moonlight Worn On The Skin
The spiritual power of silver
Silver has always carried a quiet, moonlit spirituality.

Unlike gold’s bold radiance, silver reflects rather than shines, whispering instead of declaring. Across cultures, it has been the metal of intuition, dreams, protection, and the unseen.

To wear silver is to align oneself with the realms of inner truth. Linked to the moon, silver has symbolised cycles, emotion, and transformation since ancient times. Egyptians placed it with the dead to guide their souls, Mesopotamians offered it to lunar gods of divination.

Medieval alchemists marked it with the crescent, naming it the metal that illuminates what lies beneath.

Silver’s reflectivity lies at the heart of its spiritual nature. It mirrors reality without distortion and, symbolically, reflects negativity away from the wearer. Many traditions claimed that silver darkens when the wearer is emotionally unsettled a poetic idea that captures it's “responsive” character. Across spiritual traditions, silver is also valued for its therapeutic qualities.

Historically, it was used to purify water and treat wounds, leading to the belief that it cools excess emotional “heat” and soothes agitation. Today, many people feel silver jewellery promotes calm, balance, and mental clarity. In holistic practice, silver is said to enhance intuition, stabilise mood, and harmonise the body’s subtle energies, especially when worn at pulse points where it can “listen” to the rhythm of the body.
Silver’s Soft Magic.
Intuition Protection, and Inner Calm
Associated with the Divine Feminine, silver embodies receptivity, intuition, and inner calm. It complements gold as its opposite, yin to yang, moon to sun, introspection to intent. Wearing silver often feels grounding during periods of change, grief, or self-discovery, making it a companion through life’s thresholds.

In folklore, silver was the metal that crossed boundaries, harming spirits, unlocking hidden realms, and guarding sleepers at night.
It symbolised the the spaces between states and thus became a metal for mystics, poets, and those navigating inner journeys.

Silver adornment has long held ritual significance.
Rings support clarity and emotional steadiness. Necklaces open communication and truth. Earrings enhance perception. Bracelets calm and harmonise energy. Amulets act as spiritual armour.

Across the world, silver appears again and again as a sacred material from Celtic torcs to Islamic rings, from Chinese infant bracelets to Native American symbolic jewellery.

This universality hints at a shared human intuition about its nature. Ultimately, silver becomes personal. It warms to the skin, changes, absorbs, responds. It becomes a companion of the spirit a mirror, a shield, a quiet healer.

To wear silver is to walk with a piece of moonlight, carrying a gentle strength that reflects the truth of who you are and soothes what the heart holds within.
